Similarities
The food that they ate is very similar to what they ate today- Lots of bread, olive oil and Mediterranean food in general
Pompeii was a multi-cultural place, similar to the world (let alone modern Pompeii) we live in now
The streets in Pompeii are still made of the same stone used in Ancient Rome. To this day, you could still see the markings made in the worn stone from carts used to transport materials and goods
In ancient Pompeii you could change the "rank" that you had been born or made in (common to an equestrian), much like you can change your wealth and fame in the modern age
Differences
The life span for Ancient Pompeii was only 35, a huge difference to the modern average Italian life span of 83
Women these days are treated equal to men, and have rights and laws that protect them from discrimination or abuse from men. However back in the year 79 AD, the men of Pompeii were the ones who had jobs such as political leaders or the "leader" of the family and the women stayed at home to look after the house and children.
Pompeii/Italy is now a democratic country while before the eruption Pompeii was ruled by different rules and generals/ officials from Rome. The richer people were almost always the ones who got the say in decisions.
Slaves- In modern Pompeii there are no slaves, however in 79 AD, slaves had tough jobs and were common throughout to city

Pompeii Now
'Modern Pompeii' was founded in 1981. It is a World Heritage Site (1979) and c.2.6 million tourists go there every year. In summer,the temperature is normally between 32 and 350C. There are still many things left of Pompeii from long ago, such as the well preserved public baths the Ancient Pompeians used, and the Temple of Apollo which dates back to 575 BCE. There are many shops from the train station to the entrance of Pompeii and there are many food places. There are also cafes and restaurants in Pompeii. Furthermore, there are 4 hotels in Pompeii.
